| This
locomotive traces its origins back a design of H.R. Beatty of the
Cape Government Railways for a 4-6-2 to haul passenger trains
between Beaufort West and De Aar. This series of classes was known
collectively as the "Karoo". In 1912 four slightly
enlarged versions with a higher pitched boiler were built and
delivered by the Vulcan foundry. They were known as the ' Improved
Karoo' and became Class 5 on the S.A.R. Only one of this class,
locomotive no.781, was re boilered with a standard no.1 boiler and
became the sole member of class 5R. This loco saw service hauling
passenger trains to the Strand and Stellenbosch, until transferred
to Germiston, and was ultimately withdrawn in 1969.
