23 - Locomotives

These locomotives were deigned by Mr. W. A. Day. They were built by Henschel and Sohn and Berliner Machinenbau and introduced into service between 1938 and 1939 on the Cape main line. They were particularly suited to hauling passenger and fast goods trains, and have hauled such famous trains as the Union Limited and the Blue Train. They had a tractive effort of 43,200 lbs at 75% boiler pressure. A 9,500 gallon capacity tender, riding on twelve wheels was fitted to enable the locomotive to operate more efficiently in the arid Karoo. Mechanical stokers were fitted to the entire class.

A ready to run H.O.n 3.5 (12mm gauge) version of the Class 23

This locomotive model was designed by Precision Miniatures and is available only in ready to run format, in both 12mm and 16.5 mm gauge. The model is assembled from etched brass sheet, with lost wax brass and white metal detail castings. Motive power is by a Mashima can motor and a gearbox. Wheels are RP25 standard and the 16.5mm version has Kadee No.5 couplers, while the 12mm versions has Kadee No.58 couplers installed.
